Professional deck sanding service

While drum sanding machines have been used for decades to flatten and smooth internal floors, they're not ideal for decking. Deckfix use hand held & purpose built brush sanding machines to safely strip away old coatings and surface imperfections.

We’re equipped for a better finish

Conventional floor sanders can damage your fixings, thin boards or square off that neat pencil edge that most decking boards have.  They also require all nails & screws to be forced down below the surface, which in turn causes boards to crack and split.

Deckfix use purpose built brush sanders in conjunction with our hand held tools, for superior results without compromising your timber or fixings.  Nails & screws remain or are reset to their original positions and only a fine layer of material is removed to reveal your timbers natural beauty.  This is achieved through the patented technology our specialised machines possess.

If you prefer to do your own maintenance, staining & oiling, you can still benefit from a professional safely sanding away surface damage and stains.  Whatever your needs, reach out to find out how we can help.

FAQ’s

Is sanding always necessary?

Deck sanding is not always required however it’s the only way of removing splinters, scratches or raised fibres.  When sanding, we use techniques and equipment that minimise material removal so as not to compromise the structural integrity of the timber.

Deck cleaners & strippers may be a better option for preparing your deck if the surface is still smooth with no obvious surface damage.

How much does sanding a deck cost?

The cost of deck sanding will vary depending on the size and condition of your deck, as well as the amount of detail sanding required.  Rest assured, thanks to our innovative equipment & techniques we achieve professional results while keeping your costs to a minimum.

Call or send us your details for a prompt “site unseen” estimation and the opportunity to have your questions answered.  Once satisfied we’ll arrange a time to come out and finalise a price before we begin.

Can I sand my own deck?

In some cases you can save money and get great results sanding your own deck however there are a few things to consider if going down this path.

How much sanding is needed?

If you only need a light sand to remove raised fibres or light scratches, this can be achieved using basic handheld tools.  This is a good option for some but is time consuming.  You may also need to purchase the tools required before setting aside the time to research and complete the task.

If your deck is quite large or needs more than just a light sand, using hand tools alone may no longer suffice and a large floor sanding machine might be needed.  Drum floor sanding machines are commonly available for hire but are not ideally suited for sanding decking boards.  Most hire companies also charge for equipment repairs as the drum is easily damaged by protruding nails or screws.

Are your nails or screws countersunk?

DIY deck sanding normally requires all fixings to be set below the surface, so as not to damage or break the nail or screw heads.  This also prevents the sandpaper from tearing every time you pass over a fixing.

Nails & screws on new decks are normally set either flush or slightly above the surface to avoid the water pooling and absorbing into the timber.  Professional brush sanders such as those used by Deckfix negate the need to force down nails and screws unlike conventional sanding methods.  Forcing down nails and screws below the surface normally causes surface cracks and splitting of some boards.  Split boards are a safety hazard that need to be replaced, adding further time and cost to your project.

Is it worth doing on my own?

Unless attempting to lightly sand a small deck using hand held sanders, hiring a specialist to professionally sand your deck is normally the most feasible option.  This type of work is hard on the body and can be very time consuming using only hand held tools.  Specialists do this day in, day out and have the right equipment to work efficiently and produce professional results.
