How do I know if my deck needs restoration?
Restoring your deck in the early stages of deterioration keeps your deck safe and can avoid costly damage down the track. The common signs that your deck needs restoration are usually easy to spot.
1. Severe Fading, Peeling or Discolouration
When your deck starts to look a little dull and worn it’s usually a sign that the protective stain, oil or coating has begun to deteriorate and needs to be reapplied. If not attended to, severe fading, peeling or discolouration can occur and a restoration may be needed to achieve a smooth even finish.
2. Surface Damage
Splintering, scratches or raised timber fibres require the surface to be sanded back to remove the imperfections before applying the appropriate sealer. Splinters and minor cracking signify that the timber has become brittle which can lead to the timber splitting if not promptly attended to.
3. Loose fixings, unstable boards or railings
Urgent attention is needed when this occurs as it indicates that repairs are needed to address a range of safety concerns. Any loose nails or screws should be properly refastened or replaced and the deck inspected for any missing fasteners or damage such as split timber, rot or insect infestation.
What should I do if I have concerns of structural damage?
A loose or unstable structure is cause for great concern and should be attended to immediately for safety reasons. The scope of our repair and restoration services do not extend to structural evaluations or substructural repairs. We recommend contacting an appropriately qualified builder, building inspector or structural engineer regarding any structural concerns.
How long does it take to restore a deck?
Each restoration will vary in size, requirements & complexity however our innovative equipment and processes will normally have smaller decks (20-30m2) restored within 1-3 days if the weather is favourable. This usually involves some repair work, sanding and 2-3 coats of quality sealer.
Larger or more complex projects typically range from 3 – 7 days depending on the size of the deck and processes required to achieve the desired results. As an example, a deck with an excessive build up of old coatings may need chemical stripping and power washing prior to sanding which generally extends the restoration time due to additional labour and drying time.
