Professional deck repair service

Our harsh climate demands constant up-keep and maintenance of timber decks to keep them safe and prolong their lifespan. Progressive damage, caused by weathering and other contaminants should be regularly checked as part of your routine maintenance.

Stay on top of your repairs

Decking boards that aren’t regularly maintained have a reduced level of UV and moisture protection, which inevitably causes damage to them.  When left to progress, decking boards and adjoining structural timbers are at risk of irreversible damage.  A structurally sound deck can be quickly repaired, however subfloor structural damage often requires major reconstruction.

Look out for early warning signs

Raised nails or screws should be reset or replaced as they can be a trip hazard or can contribute to an unstable structure. They are normally a sign of excessive expansion and contraction in the timber and can be accompanied by warped or cracked boards. Damaged decking boards and fixings are potential hazards that can lead to structural damage if the cause of the problem is not rectified.

Areas of concentrated fungal growth are of concern as they indicate the presence of excessive moisture and the likelihood of rot. Wet rot makes timber soft and spongy while dry rot causes it to shrink and become highly brittle. Replacing a rotting board is fairly straight forward and should be done before the rot spreads to adjoining boards or structural timbers.

Excessive moisture and rot are also known to increase the risk of borers and termites. Insect infestation in its early stages can be hard to spot but ultimately results in the destruction of timber structures. A pest control specialist should be contacted if you have any concerns of infestation to determine the best overall treatment for your home.

FAQ’s

What is the difference between deck repair and restoration?

Deck repairs typically include replacing damaged timber and resetting or replacing fixings, nails or screws.  Repairing your deck is however only the first step to restoring it.

Depending on the scope of work, a restoration may include repairs, removal of old coatings, sanding away surface damage and applying several coats of quality stain or oil.  A complete restoration provides a clean slate that is easier to regularly maintain.  Visit our deck restorations page to see if this service is right for you.

What should I do if I have concerns of structural damage?

A loose or unstable structure is cause for great concern and should be attended to immediately for safety reasons. The scope of our repair and restoration services do not extend to structural evaluations or substructural repairs.  We recommend contacting an appropriately qualified builder, building inspector or structural engineer regarding any structural concerns.
